Sara Susen was born and raised in Maine until moving to Nassau County with her husband and four children in June of 2013. While Sara will always love her Northern roots, she has enjoyed living in a warmer climate and intends to stay in Nassau County for years to come. Her favorite activities include walking the beach while searching for shark teeth, and exploring different parts of the state. She truly loves the people and culture of the South.
Sara has been a homeschooling mom for 17 years and has vast experience with the homeschool community. She has participated in homeschooling co-ops, taught a High School Writing class to local homeschool students, and taught/directed the homeschool program, Classical Conversations. Sara’s own children have had learning struggles, especially her youngest son who was diagnosed with high-functioning autism with intellectual impairment at the age of 12. She has fought hard to retrieve the services and support that her son has needed. Sara also runs a support group for Special Needs Moms in the area. She is very committed to helping other parents find services and support for their own children.
Sara has been a tutor at Breakthroughs since September 2019, most of that time spent as a Lindamood-Bell® tutor. She has received intensive tutor training from Lindamood-Bell® and has worked with many children who struggle with language and literacy weaknesses. She is very passionate about the Lindamood-Bell® programs because she first saw it make a huge difference with her own son’s learning disabilities, and since then has seen the significant improvement it has made for all of her students who have struggled in the areas of reading, spelling, speech, and comprehension.
